As we have discovered from Action Adventure to Superhero: Taking a Look at Sub Genres Of Action Movies, there are several different sub genres of the action film, such as superhero, espionage, action thrillers and crime action films. In general, action films aim to reach males in their late teens to late thirties. However, because of the broad range of sub genres of this type of film, many other demographics are becoming interested.
You’ve read about six of the sub genres of action films. Here are six more categories that may spark your interest.
Martial Arts Film
Action films in this category generally focus on hand-to-hand combat and less on explosions and big-time visual effects. Don’t let this description fool you though. Martial art action films most often incorporate some wicked cool stunts that can rival an explosion any day.
Military and War
This is just an obvious subgenre of action films since war in itself is high action violence. War movies involve gun battles, explosions, and hand-to-hand combat, as well as highly emotional storylines.

Apocalypse/Disaster
Apocalypse/disaster movies tend to go for hit Blockbuster status and involve the heroes of the film trying to save the world from impending doom or evil. They tend to utilize a lot of special effects to portray aforementioned disasters.
Action Comedy
The action comedy is a relatively new subgenre of the action movie group that is beloved among a wide range of age groups. Everyone enjoys a laugh or two thrown in between heart pounding action, right? These films are generally more lighthearted than the common action film and tend to steer away from death or serious injury.
Westerns
Westerns are a classic genre, so I feel a little odd placing it into a subgenre category. However, these films do seem to fit the bill: gun and hand-to-hand combats, heroes and villains, and adventures through the wild west. Though the plots generally stay the same, it’s hard to resist popping in a tried and true western film.
Family Action-Adventure
I don’t know about you, but kids nowadays seem harder and harder to please. In a society that thrives on action and is always on the move, family action-adventure films have begun popping up in the cinema. Though similar to regular action-adventure films, these movies tend to have less blood and violence, less sex, and more of an emphasis on the adventure of the treasure hunt.
